Computer Aided Web Interviewing (CAWI)
The benefits of email and web based surveys, often called Computer Aided Web Interviewing (CAWI), are:
- They are comparatively inexpensive
- Large samples can be surveyed
- Surveys may be undertaken rapidly
- Rapid collation of data and statistical manipulation of data
- The low cost and automated nature of CAWI is ideal for rolling
or repeated surveying
- Ability to complete the survey when most convenient to the interviewee
- Ability to pose more complex questions
- High level of standardisation
The problems with this approach are:
- Low levels of response
- The survey respondents are likely to be biased, typically towards
lower grades / classes
- Anti-spam software may interfere with the survey delivery
- The responses are likely to be more superficial
Never-the-less the is valuable for measuring performance, for example, against key business indicators (KPIs) or measuring changes in customer perceptions.
